My 13th mix was streamed on Internet Public Radio, Guadalajara (3/11, 9 PM GMT+7). Even after 2 days, I couldn't stop smiling whenever I see my picture on "Latest Show" section ("ooh I made something huge!").

Grief is not an easy object to be involved in our daily conversations. It's easily forgotten or being avoided. It's also the trickiest thing to tackle, because it came in waves. Just like my mix cover (it's David Louis Cintron's artwork, I love it so much).

Grief could strain you to bed and won't let you get out of it. At other times they would strangle you with guilt. If you're lucky, in good days they'll let you keep the sweet smells of freesia perfume they're wearing, to linger on your clothes days after.

Anger is easier to express. Even love is not that easy to be talked about, aside from romantic love. You got gajillion songs about love, but it often left your friends cringing as you said it. Saying "I love you" just because you really care about that person, nothing romantic or sexual about it, it's the hardest to accept. They might say "Are you dying?" or "You're not hitting on me, aren't you?" I know it's probably very cultural, or very apocalyptic to say it without any explanations (for some people). But who needs that? In the time of people are not being able to be physically present in the same room, I think you should say it more. Move the needle and you should keep doing it after the pandemic is over.

"Human lives had poured into this place over time, volunteered to become party to exile and worse...Sacrifices didn't need names.

By the end of March, a Leeds (UK) based balearic unit, Sea/Sound invited me to be in their mix series. It took me some time to finally send them this, it's my first mix after hibernating creatively. Thank you so much for the opportunity and for accommodating the process.

This is rather a contemplative mix for me. I was thinking what makes me proud of myself in a decade. The fellowship in South Africa (2012) was certainly one of them. I recollected every little things that made me happy; the food, scents, 25-hours trip and stop-by at UAE, travel-to-knit gang that I formed with other students and tabletop mountains. This is part of my happy thoughts, it helped me get through hard times. A reminder that I do still matter, even though you're living in the world full of uncertainty now. And you are too, you still matter!
Happy New Year, wishing you a solid start for (hopefully not) bumpy roads ahead!

I closed 2019 with my 8th mix (in order of appearance, 9th for order of mixing) for Hamon Radio, Japan and immersing myself in many good radio stations around the net. As I spent more time with supplying mixes for other netradio and the label 100.000, I miss my own series, Mineral House. The last one was in October.

I drew capybara and mandarins as my mix cover, just because I think I would live happily as capybara in another life and I'm tired of greeneries for ambient music cover. Why not kawaii capy instead?
My second time around making mix for Hamon Radio, Japan. I feel more prepared than my first one. Hopefully on my third, they will give me different artworks (no more paddy fields forever, please).
Even though I didn't collect vinyl nor having a vinyl player, but I instantly felt "oh-wow-I-found-another-tribe-member" from seeing Moonship Music's instagram for the first time. They are more or less the same like what I had on my iTunes. I left comment on their post about the re-issue of Toshifumi Hinata's works (according to Chee Shimizu) Broken Belief and the conversation's never ending since then.

When Ekel (the owner) asked me to do guest mix for them, of course I couldn't say anything except "yes and yes!". This mix originally published on November, 2019.

They gave me this Jean Arp's artwork Composition 1 as my mix cover, which I later realized that Arp and I share the same birthdate. Perhaps it's just a coincidence, but I never believe in one.
Some might say, it took us 5-7 days to establish a new habit, but we often get bored on the third day, then back to day 1. Repeat. There was no way for us to understand the sheer impossibility of what we were doing, whether we were witness to a failure or just being persistent.

I dedicated this mix for all of us who succeed in waking up at 6 AM every morning, surviving a 1-week detox program, functioning well without coffee (or latte) for months, falling asleep before midnight and those who could finished their daily tasks in the middle of heat.

Time to celebrate!
About Hamon Radio:

Hamon Radio is an independent internet radio station based in Tokyo. We started Hamon Radio to create a third place where people of all the world share and communicate with each other via selected music from the world, particularly Japan.
"Hamon" means ripple in Japanese. When a drip falls in water, the ripple expands gently and gradually turns to greater influence. We hope Hamon Radio can be like this very first drip.

(Aside from Mixcloud page, they also recorded their performances in several cool places around japan on their Youtube channel)

This mix for Hamon Radio is my first mix I pitched for international radio and got accepted. I believe in creating my own luck, I hope this is only the beginning.

It's such an honor to be a part of 100,000's mixes. Perhaps I'm the only person on their list, who is not in a band, musician, DJ or label-owner. Thank you James, for making it happened! Thank you for making me believe in the future of Mineral House and collecting music.

Here's an excerpt from the mix:

Dindie is a Jakarta-based illustrator who is fascinated with science fiction, manga and graphite. When she's not busy drawing, she loves making mixtapes. She used to produce and host four radio shows on the now-hibernating, online radio station, Radio Semut. She currently produces the monthly series, Mineral House.

Most of artists in this mix are the ones that made her dive deeper into modern classical, Japanese minimalist, ambient and balearic. Musette, Hiroshi Yoshimura, Seigen Ono, Dominique Lawalrée and Muji BGM, just to name a few. For her monthly mixtape, Mineral House, she often puts up breezy, symmetrical tunes, but for the sake of her 100,000 mix and her favourite month of the year, she picked something saucier. Hope you’ll feel the urge to move your shoulder and feet in the next 1-hour.

These past weeks I’ve been really absorbed in renewable energy and power plants inside national parks issues. I want to be optimistic about renewable energy development in Indonesia, but somehow the way people pursue it, it’s just another business-as-usual scheme. As I picked songs in this mix, my mind wander to Uluru-Kata Tjuta Park in Australia. Marimba, mallets (or synth that sounds like one), woodwind, and breezy wind. I found my oasis in the heat of desert sun.

The first installment of Mineral House! I'm starting to share another part of my compact music library, consists of modern classical, (mostly) Japanese minimalism, ambient and walearic tunes at Slora Sauna Mixcloud.

I finally figured out how to channel my love of Japanese and modern classical, after too many episodes of Rowan Mason's Sanpo Disco, Jen Monroe's Listen To This, Fond/Sound, Tomoyuki Fujii's Post-Ambient Blog and NTS show under modern classical and ambient tags.
Then a good friend of mine had taken me under his wings for using Native Instrument Traktor DJ software, of course it left me with many blank seconds to adjust with how things works there.

Thank you everyone who already listened to it and made it as your favorite since months ago.
I am sad to hear my favorite mix, Sanpo Disco, is ending, for it's been an amazing journey on my musical apprehension for the last 3 years. I read Sui Zhen's comment with watery eyes too, couldn't agree more with her.

"...I recall the first time you sat in my kitchen and told me about this idea. My cynicism got the better of me and I couldn't see how people would find time to make specially crafted mixes without monetary exchange. That was so naive and also, sad that I would think that way. You proved it to all of us that there is a dedicated audience of listeners and mix makers ready and waiting in the wings for a shining moment on your carefully considered platform. You connected the dots for many across seas and plains linking like-minded people together around for this vision for 'music to listen to on a stroll'.

You've also created an amazing pool of reference for me personally as a musician to draw from. I'm sure I'm not alone in taking influence from the music in these mixes. You've inspired me mostly because you reminded me of the value of intent - and the value of doing something for the love. And all the good that can come from this - that may lead to many personal activities and creative pathways. Thanks for being such a noble, persistent and also patient facilitator of other people's creative endeavours. What you do is a fine art! I'm lucky to have benefited from #SanpoDisco over the years and luckier to be able to continue bathe in your musical passions. Thank you and congratulations, my buddy."

Perhaps many mix makers have never realized how they could touch others through their picks. Even some of them had saved me from my darkest hours and many of my artwork grew with them. Listen to Rowan's final mix, it's really great! (Also, they have an astounding episode with Georgia as guest)

As I wrote this post, I am struggling to get myself out of losing my interest in drawing and doing tangible things I used to love. It feels like I'm drowning even more.

For past weeks I tried to immerse my eyes and mind on Miyazaki's doco The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness and Never Ending Man, and also finished reading Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage.

Osamu Tezuka's is known for cinematic panels. I intentionally copy this panels for master study, since I want to learn drawing dynamic movement. "Hin No Tori" or Phoenix (1968-1989) was the series I looked up to. It moves me beyond words. I could feel how shaky grounds feels like for animate (animals) and inanimate object (rocks, ground).

From Wikipedia:
Many of the Phoenix stories feature intensely experimental layout and visual design. For example, Universetells the story of four spacefarers who are forced to leave their spaceship in separate escape pods. The panels of the story are organized such that each character has his own vertical or horizontal tier on the page, emphasizing the astronauts' isolation; the tiers combine and separate as characters join together and split up. In an astonishing sequence after one character's death, he is represented for a number of pages by a series of empty black panels.

There are days when you feel you have to finish what you've started, even if you feel half-hearted throughout the process. This Carlo Scarpa's Brion-Vega cemetery inspired is one of them.
By the end of September, I was joining Roman Muradov class "Digital Illustration: Drawing with Shapes & Layers" at Skillshare. I was unsure, since it involve things that I fear most in digital and traditional drawing: drawing with negative space and without outline.

The class objectives are to create a design based on 2 shapes we see around us and challenge ourself to use more irregular shapes, also experiment with screen-printing and digital techniques (adding and subtracting, overprinting, resizing) to achieve a balanced composition.

Here are some notes I made during the class:

1) Software: Photoshop CC 2015

2) Preparations:

colors I used: #EEA369 & #5EA8B2

brush: Kyle T. Webster Gouache A Go Go (the same brush too for eraser)

prepare to draw without outline (I'm not used to draw like this, so I had to adjust every now and then)

Things I saw in front of me:

>> Yasuhiro Yamashita's "Reflection of Mineral" house (I was googling Japanese house and suddenly it came up on the search result)

>> Yas Kaz's album "Virgo Indigo"

3) Things I learned from the class:

Use the bright color instead the mute one, CMYK tends to mute it down. If you're having a second thought and want to switch it to RGB in the middle of process, I think it'll leave you with disappointment. Stick to RGB or CMYK since the beginning.

Try several color combos using "replace color". Since you're doing each color separately, it will helps with indecisive mind. I'd prefer bold color, but it won't hurt if you want to go pastel.

Things that inspired most for the drawing are Yasuhiro Yamashita's house in Japan (I collect small pyrites, the house shape resembles to it) and Yas Kaz's album (for the color scheme). I know these are not really the project instruction, but it's something that lays in front of me by the time I started to draw.

You could turn up/down the opacity of each colors, if you find the default colors are too harsh. I did it for building's shadow or shadow inside the room.

Do not forget to switch between layers and colors!

1080 x 1080 pixels is an ideal workspace

Using magnetic lasso or pen tools for more precise drawing, but I personally am a "Shift + eraser" type of person. Erasing is so much fun than drawing nodes.

Drawing with negative space is harder than I thought, but it's very rewarding if you finally finished a project!

I also try two other color combos:

(This is my first color choice before switching to purple-orange)

Awesome Friends (1)

digital drawing on photoshop (with Kyle T. Webster brush)

2018

---

Between deadlines are the most creative time of my entire illustrating career. The feeling of uncertainty or unfulfilled are somehow became a good reason of why I create. Back in the time I felt unhappy with the day job, writing boring papers or waiting for endless feedbacks from clients, I came up with Daily Drawing, the visual diary I drew everyday. I even discovered the joy of drawing 11 years ago, as I got bored with my life as jobless undergraduate.

These past weeks, I worked together with a communication team to design conference collateral materials. In boredom, I discovered a Japanese illustrator, Nimura Daisuke. I showed his works to some of my team members and colleagues, they said "isn't this yours? I thought it was yours, it's so similar!" (thank you, but I think his drawings are more dynamic). Honestly, I could not stop thinking about his composition and use of colours days after.

I tried 2-color scheme for these portraits of awesome girls I knew. I think I should call these series as "Awesome Friends".
